Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU)

What is an Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU)?

An Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU) is a refinery unit that performs atmospheric distillation to separate crude oil into valuable hydrocarbon fractions such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, kerosene, diesel, atmospheric gas oil (AGO), and atmospheric residue. Operating at or near atmospheric pressure, the ADU is the primary processing unit in a refinery and serves as the starting point for converting crude oil into transportation fuels and petrochemical feedstocks.

The Atmospheric Distillation Unit is one of the most critical assets in the oil and gas and refining industries, supplying feedstock to downstream units such as vacuum distillation units (VDUs), fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units, hydrocrackers, catalytic reformers, and other refinery conversion processes.

Why is an Atmospheric Distillation Unit Important?

The ADU plays a central role in refinery operations by separating crude oil into fractions based on their boiling points, enabling each stream to be processed further or blended into finished products. Efficient operation of the unit directly impacts refinery throughput, product quality, energy consumption, and overall profitability.

Optimizing an Atmospheric Distillation Unit helps maximize product recovery, improve fraction separation, reduce energy usage, and ensure stable plant operations. It also supports downstream process efficiency by delivering feedstocks that meet the required quality specifications.

How Does an Atmospheric Distillation Unit Operate?

Before entering the ADU, crude oil is desalted and preheated through a network of heat exchangers before being heated in a furnace. The heated crude is then introduced into the atmospheric distillation column, where hydrocarbons separate according to their boiling ranges. Lighter fractions are collected from the upper sections of the column, while heavier products are withdrawn from lower sections.

The performance of an ADU depends on factors such as crude oil composition, furnace efficiency, heat integration, reflux control, column hydraulics, tray performance, process control, and energy optimization. Modern refineries use advanced process control (APC), process simulation, advanced analytics, and industrial AI to optimize ADU performance, increase product yields, and reduce operating costs.
